Crowns & Bridges
——

Dental crowns and bridges are similar restorations that address separate needs. A crown is a tooth-shaped cap designed to preserve a tooth after it has been treated for damage or decay. Dr. White can remove portions of a damaged tooth, leaving behind a healthy foundation for a crown. Conversely, a bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth. A replacement tooth “bridges” the gap, often supported by dental crowns placed on adjacent teeth. Dr. White will thoroughly examine your smile to determine which restoration and method of support will best meet your needs.

The most apparent benefit of crowns and bridges is improved appearance. The materials and techniques involved in creating these custom restorations can give you a natural-looking smile. Another important benefit is the balance they restore to your jaws. An imbalanced bite can result in a condition known as temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, disorder, which is marked by such symptoms as back, neck, shoulder, and facial pain. With a custom-made crown or bridge placed by Dr. White, you can enjoy excellent comfort and health, in addition to a great-looking smile.

Placing Dental Crowns & Bridges
——

If you need to restore a single tooth with a dental crown, Dr. White will reduce the size of the tooth by carefully removing decayed or damaged portions. Next, a mold is made of the treated tooth and surrounding teeth (if you already have a dental implant, Dr. White will take a mold of the implant). The mold is sent to an offsite laboratory, where it is used to create a custom crown. This process takes about two weeks. In the meantime, a temporary crown may be placed over the tooth. When the permanent crown is complete, Dr. White will cement it in place with a special dental adhesive. He will check your bite repeatedly, making any last-minute alterations needed to ensure that your jaws meet properly.

If you are missing teeth and require a bridge, you and Dr. White can discuss your preferred method of support, either through adjacent crowns or a dental implant. If you choose to support the bridge with crowns, Dr. White will reduce the size of the adjacent teeth to accommodate crowns. He will take a mold of these teeth, along with the gap in your smile, to create the restorations you need.

Caring For Crowns & Bridges
——

Crowns and bridges do not last forever. Their average lifespan is about seven years, but they can last much longer with proper care. It is important to avoid brittle and sticky foods after receiving a crown or bridge. It is also very important to floss regularly near your restorations, and to alter your technique so that floss is pulled from front to back, rather than straight up and down, to avoid dislodging your restoration.
