Kinds Of Dentures
——

Dentures can be either complete or partial. Complete dentures replace all teeth in your jaw, while partial dentures replace several consecutive missing teeth. There is a variety of ways to support dentures. The most effective is dental implants. These titanium posts are surgically implanted in the jaw bone to provide support equal to that of natural tooth roots. This requires some patience on the part of the wearer, because receiving dental implants involves at least two surgeries and several months of healing time. However, once the process is complete, you can enjoy a lifetime of excellent support. Dental implants also help you to retain bone mass in your jaw, which can be lost in the absence of tooth roots.

If you are not a suitable candidate for surgery, dentures may also draw support from your own gums, held in place with a mild adhesive. If you have a few natural, healthy teeth remaining, dentures can be made to draw support from them as well. If you are unsure of which means of denture support would benefit you most, contact our Lubbock office to schedule a one-on-one consultation with Dr. White.

How Dentures Are Made
——

Creating a custom set of dentures takes about a month, and five visits to our office. Dr. White will take an impression of your jaw using special molding materials. Next, he will measure the dimensions of your jaw. The color of your teeth will also be noted, and this combined information will be sent to a special dental laboratory so a set of dentures can be made to fit your mouth.

Living With Dentures
——

It can take some time to get used to your dentures. The process of speaking and eating will be somewhat different than it was with your natural teeth. To become acclimated to eating with dentures, start by cutting your food into small pieces, and practice chewing with both sides of your mouth. Because speaking relies heavily on movements of the tongue against the teeth and gums, you should practice enunciating within the new dimensions of your mouth.

Over time, your mouth will naturally change, and you may need to make adjustments to your dentures. Loose dentures can cause sores, infection, discomfort, and overall inefficiency in your day-to-day life. Dentures are also susceptible to wear. Repairs can be made over time, but complete replacement may eventually become necessary. The surest way to ensure that your dentures fit snugly and provide you with the best possible results is to select the right dentist. Dr. Jason White takes great care to provide his patients with excellent dentures that can provide years of comfort and confident smiles.
