Incredible Support for Dentures, Crowns, and Bridges

If you are missing one or more teeth, dental implants placed at our LubbockWest Texas office can provide the most natural-feeling and dependable support available. Dental implants are titanium posts surgically placed in the jaw. Because the implants fuse directly to your bone, they function just like natural tooth roots. Although this fusion process takes several months to complete, the dental implants can last for more than 40 years with proper maintenance. The Advantages Of Dental Implants

Dental implants provide numerous advantages for anyone missing teeth. These advantages are perhaps most apparent in patients who wear dentures. Conventional dentures rest on the gums, held in place with a mild and potentially messy adhesive. Under these circumstances, dentures can easily slip out of place while speaking or eating, in addition to making it difficult to articulate while speaking. However, implant-supported dentures are held firmly in place, allowing the wearer to eat and speak without feeling self-conscious.

Dental bridges often require the alteration of adjacent teeth to accommodate dental crowns, which hold the dental bridge in place. On the other hand, a dental implant can hold restorations in place without depending upon natural teeth for support. This can also provide an advantage if you have a single damaged tooth that is not capable of supporting a crown.

Dental implants can also help you maintain bone mass in your jaw. When you lose teeth, your jaw slowly begins resorbing the bone cells surrounding the tooth socket. However, when you have a dental implant, your body perceives it as a functional tooth root, and retains bone mass that would otherwise be lost.

The Dental Implant Procedure

Receiving dental implants typically requires two surgeries. Before your first surgery, Dr. White will take X-rays of your jaws to determine exactly where to place the implant. The initial surgery begins with an incision being made in your gums, exposing the jaw bone. Next, a pilot hole is drilled in the bone. The threaded implant is then screwed into the bone. Finally, Dr. White will stitch the gums closed over the post, where it will become fused with the jaw bone over the next three months.

During your second surgery, Dr. White will once again create an incision in the gums, exposing the top of the implant. Next, a special collar is connected to the implant, facilitating proper healing of the gums. In two to three weeks, the gums will have completed healing. At this point, Dr White can begin creating your custom dentures, crown, or bridge.
